Welcome to the first ever “Sly’s Report Card”, here I grade the Oakland Athletics performance from there most recent game.

New York Yankees (57-35) lose to Oakland Athletics (48-44) 3-4 in game 1 July 19, 2012

Offense

I categorize the hitters in four classification Excellent (A), Above Average (B), Average (C), and Needs Improvement.

Excellent (A)

Yoenis Cespedes crush a 2 run HR to deep left field in the bottom of the 1st inning to give the A’s an early 2-0 lead.

Yoenis Cespedes who missed the teams first meeting with NYY earlier this season with a hand injury wasted no time introducing himself to the Bronx Bombers with a 2 run bomb to left field to give the A’s an early lead.

Cespedes (LF): 2-3 HR, 1R, 2RBI, 1BB

Above Average (B)

Could have easily given both Coco Crisp and Jemile Weeks excellent grades, since you really can’t ask more from the top of your order then to go a combined 5-8 3R, 1SB. They really used there speed tonight as 3 of the 5 hits were all infield singles.

Crisp (CF): 3-4 1R

Weeks (2B): 2-4 2R, 1SO, 1SB

Average (C)

Hard time deciding if Seth Smith had an average game or above average game considering his 2 RBI’s were the difference in the game. However his 3 strikeout night had me lean more towards the average night. Brandon Moss as shown he can impact a game with one swing of the bat, had a chance for a Sac Fly in the 3rd Cespedes didn’t tag up on what might have been a close play at home.

Smith (DH): 1-4 2RBI, 3SO

Moss (1B): 1-4 (double), 1SO

Needs Improvement

The following guys were all hit-less tonight in a combined 0-14 with 5SO, and 0-6 with RISP. Josh Reddick was unable to get a ball past the infield but did work a walk in the 5th. Derek Norris struck out twice, while Cliff Pennington missed a chance for a double to right by just a few feet. Brandon Inge probably had the roughest go around going 0-3 with RISP.

Reddick (RF): 0-3 1BB, 1SO

Inge (3B): 0-4 1SO

Norris (C): 0-4 2SO

Pennington (SS): 0-3 1SO

Defense

Here we will look how the A’s pitchers did breaking down their innings with grades of A, B, C,D, F as well as an overall grade for that pitcher.

Starter

Rookie A.J. Griffin has been as consistent as can be since making his MLB debut back on June 24, and tonight was no different. After a couple high pitched innings (and confusing 1st check fielding section) to start the game Griffin had 1-2-3 innings in 3rd, 4th and 5th innings. Griffin showed no fear as he attacked the power hitting Yankee lineup throwing 2/3 of his pitches for strikes allowing only 2 runs and no HRs.

A. J. Griffin was a fearless attacking the Yankees as he threw 2/3 of his pitches were strikes and record 4 strikeouts.

1st: 1B, F7,1B *7-1 FC, 4-3G (C)

2nd: 3-1G, 1B, K (swinging), 1-3G (B)

3rd: F8, 4-3G, F7 (A)

4th: F7, P6, K (swinging) (A)

5th: F8, F9, 6-3G (A)

6th: 1B, K (swinging), 1B, SF8, 1B, K (swinging) (C)

Griffin 6.0 IP 7H, 2R, 2ER, 4SO 90P (B+)

Bullpen

The Bullpen was fantastic allowing only 1run on a HR with no walks and 3SO in 3 innings of work. Sean Doolittle had a 1-2-3 in the 7th as did Grant Balfour in the 8th. Ryan Cook came on in the 9th to close it out and got his 10th save to finish the game.

7th: F6, P4, 4-3G (A)

Doolittle: 1.0 IP (A)

8th: K, 1-3G, 3-1G (A)

Balfour: 1.0 IP 1SO (A+)

9th: F7, HR, K (swinging), 4-3G (A)

Cook: 1.0 IP 1H, 1R, 1ER, 1SO (A-)

Fielding

Fielding is like special teams in football usually not noticed unless something spectacular happens, something horrific happens or something bizarre. Which was the case in the top of the 1st. Here’s the breakdown for the second out of the inning:

  • Robinson Cano up to bat with runners on 1st & 2nd with 1out
  • Cano hits a hard line drive to LF
  • Cespedes appears to make a running catch and drops ball on the transfer.
  • Runners stay at bases
  • Umpires rule it not a catch
  • Cespedes picks up ball and over throws 3B
  • Griffin backing up catches ball and walks to 3B steps on the bag for the force out
  • Griffin throws to 2B
  • Rodriguez beats throw to 2B
  • Final result 7-1 FC.

Never seen it before and highly doubt that I’ll ever see it again.

Final Grades
